Since the closure of border crossings, queues into Lithuania have increased 2.3 times, and into Latvia — 5.8 times. This was reported by the State Border Committee.
The committee recalled that two months ago, Lithuanian authorities closed the “Šumskas” (“Losha” on the Belarusian side) and “Tverečius” (“Vidzy”) border crossings. On September 19, Latvia closed the “Silene” crossing (“Urbany”), leaving only one functioning checkpoint on the border with Belarus — “Pāternieki” (“Hryharawshchyna”).
As a result, traffic flows were redistributed among the five remaining border crossings.
In two months, transport queues into Lithuania increased 2.3 times. In one month, queues into Latvia grew 5.8 times. The busiest route into the EU remains the Lithuanian “Medininkai” crossing (“Kamenny Log” on the Belarusian side), which has been handling around 39% of trucks and passenger cars daily over the past two months.
The Belarusian side states it is ready to fulfill all previously agreed arrangements for the passage of people and vehicles across the border. Despite Belarus’s initiatives to restore cooperation, European authorities are demonstratively ignoring these proposals, thereby worsening the situation at the border.
